For years now, I have looked upon American sports and with interest, followed the "Power Rankings" in each sport. Obviously a competition table is the ideal way to see how a team has performed throughout the year, but I believe that the power ranking format offers a great way for people to see how a team is travelling in recent weeks. I have only really seen it done in the Sydney Morning Herald every now and then, and can never really understand why it isn't done on a regular basis. Obviously with American sports and their cross-conference format, it is a good gauge on each team on a level playing field. I hope to be as accurate as possible but please feel free to offer your feedback. Especially if you disagree with a point that I raise. I am always happy to hear what people think as hearing other perspectives can often change your own.
ROUND 13
Bold = This week ( ) = Last week
(-) Melbourne Storm = Were down 12-0 away to the Warriors and fought back hard to score 22 unanswered points and go onto to win the match. Form side of the season.
(-) West Tigers = Won 40-nil against the Raiders in a cold, wet and windy nations capital. Starting to get their full squad of players back. Have now won 6 in a row!
(-) Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs = Tough win against the Rabbits in the game of the round. Keep aiming up each week and surprising with their performance. Bad performance against the Titans, but maybe that form was well represented (see below).
(-) Gold Coast Titans = Keep on surprising and winning tough games. Had a mountain of possession and should've always won. Their roster is finally starting to perform.
(-) Brisbane Broncos = Bounced back well from an embarrassing loss to the Storm. Did concede a mountain of points but finished the last 20 minutes off superbly.
(-) Manly Warringah Sea Eagles = Didn't play flashy footy, but almost dropped down to the Dragons excitement level (boring) and beat them at their own game.
(-) South Sydney Rabbitohs = Played well in parts but made simple mistakes at crucial points in the game. Need to be more disciplined. Few injuries going to test them in coming weeks.
(-) Cronulla Sharks = Gave up a 20-6 halftime lead against the Eels and also didn't score a point in the second half. Not their best performance but the Gal-train wasn't out there for majority of the second half.
(-) NZ Warriors = Played well in some parts against the Storm, but still have to learn how to win tough football games by grinding out a win. Forwards need to step up a level.
(-) North Queensland Cowboys = Lacked possession and payed the ultimate price for it. Need to keep their eyes on the bigger picture and cannot continually rely on Thurston and Bowen.
(-) St George Illawarra Dragons = Lost away to Manly. Definitely have the squad to produce a top performance. Strong defence, poor attack.
(-) Penrith Panthers = Enjoyed a week off after putting Manly to the sword at home. Will be looking to fire this week without their SOO players.
(-) Sydney Roosters = A young team losing close games. Had the bye after a loss to the Dogs. Need to start showing something before their season crumbles.
(-) Newcastle Knights = A much better effort against the Broncos. Definitely not the same team that lost to the Titans. Starting to get their squad back to full strength and will have to start performing.
(-) Parramatta Eels = One win doesn't erase how poor their season has gone thus far. It does have them moving in the right direction though. Will relish a week off after their second win.
(-) Canberra Raiders = Woeful, lacked conviction and deserved to lose by more! Losing 40-0 at home! Speculation grows about the future of coach David Furner.
